First time driving to full operating temp in the E90 since replacing the valve cover gasket didn’t go well. 80mph on the interstate with the sun behind me and all of a sudden full cloud of blue gray smoke behind me. Fuck me. Oil level still good, no codes and running good so ease it home the last mile.
Uh oh
Hot oil spewed on to the exhaust manifold and front turbo. I assume I wrinkled the gasket a little during install, or maybe with the VCG finally good, an oil line seal to the turbo finally had enough. Ugh.

That could have ended up in flames . Oil and hot exhaust aren’t a very good combination .

That was a bad feeling I bet.

That could have ended much worse. Definitely not an easy repair though.

Which, in fairness, would have fixed the oil leak.

Like ly yes. Or at least it wouldn’t anymore be the #1 problem.
My Opel did have a fuel leak near the carburetor. A fter the flames were finally distinguished I wasn’t anymore worried about the leaky fuel line.

There was about 10 minutes after parking it where a close eye was kept and a fire extinguisher nearby.

Yeah, the first attempt was a whole day affair, involving lots of salty words.

At least when racecar drivers see big plumes of oil smoke behind them, it might not be their car.

Now you know what sort of pain to expect.
